Information for expectant mothers

Registration for labor and delivery

The hospital has lifted all restrictions on patients accepted

In the past, the hospital preferentially accepted patients residing in Iwata City, Fukuroi City, and Mori-machi in Shizuoka Prefecture based on its policy to provide local residents with safe and secure medical care.
However, there are no longer any restrictions. The hospital accepts all patients including those planning to temporarily return to their hometown in the vicinity of the hospital for childbirth. However, due to the limited space available, we recommend that you schedule your first visit to our Obstetrics and Gynecology department at the earliest possible timing.

If you wish to give birth at this hospital, please visit our Obstetrics and Gynecology department first, and then register for childbirth. Registration will only be accepted after your first visit.
Patients with referral letters from other medical institutions can make an appointment for their first visit through our Regional Medical Cooperation Department (Tel: 0538-38-5545).
Even if you have a referral letter, we ask you to start visiting our Obstetrics and Gynecology department before your 20th week of pregnancy.

What to do when you think you are pregnant

1. Visit an obstetrician

Please visit the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of this hospital or a local obstetrics clinic. When visiting this hospital, come to the New Patient Reception Desk on the first floor on a weekday by 11:00 am. Be sure to bring your health insurance card and your Patient ID Card if you already have one.

If you have a referral letter from another medical institution you have been visiting, you can make an appointment through the Regional Medical Cooperation Department of this hospital.
Please come to the New Patient Reception Desk 15 minutes earlier than your appointment time.

2. Have your Maternal and Child Health Handbook (Boshitecho) issued

When a doctor has confirmed your pregnancy, please visit your local municipal office to receive your Maternal and Child Health Handbook (Boshitecho) and publicly funded maternal health checkup tickets.
The publicly funded maternal health checkup tickets can only be used by residents of Shizuoka Prefecture. Residents of other prefectures should ask their local municipality whether there is an alternative subsidy available.

If you are a resident of Iwata City, please refer to the website Iwata City.

3. Returning to your hometown near this hospital for childbirth

Please visit the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of this hospital before you reach your 20th week of pregnancy with a referral letter from the medical institution you have been visiting. If you have passed your 20th week, you need to see our obstetrician to discuss whether the hospital can accept you. Registration for childbirth needs to be made on your first visit to the O & G department of this hospital.

4. Medical expenses for inpatient care

You will be asked to pay for your inpatient care when you are discharged. At this hospital, normal childbirth usually costs approximately 600,000 yen if you stay in a private room. (The medical bill will be higher in the case of a delivery during nighttime hours or on a holiday.)
Childbirth expenses are generally not covered by health insurance, but there are cases where expenses are partially covered, such as delivery by Caesarean section and vacuum extraction. Please ask hospital staff for details.
You will be asked to pay the total amount of your medical bill unless you have applied for the lump-sum allowance for childbirth and childcare (420,000 yen), in which case, you will be asked to pay the total amount less the lump-sum allowance. Payment is accepted in cash or credit card.

Lump-sum allowance for childbirth and childcare

At this hospital, we ask patients, as a general rule, to use the Direct Payment System for Childbirth Lump Sum, which helps reduce the payment amount at the hospital cashier upon discharge. Patients using this system can deduct 420,000 yen (lump-sum allowance for childbirth and childcare) from their total medical bill for childbirth, allowing them to pay 420,000 yen less at the hospital cashier.
Those planning on giving birth at this hospital are asked to submit the application form for using this system to the Obstetrics/Gynecology department reception. If you should prefer not to use this system, please be advised that you will be asked to pay the total expenses required for childbirth in a lump sum.

Please download the application form for the system

Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy

Iwata City Hospital participates in the Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy, which aims at providing compensation for severe cerebral palsy resulting from labor and delivery, analyzing the cause, and preventing recurrence. Expectant mothers are asked to fill out an application form for this system when they are around 20 weeks pregnant. The premium of 16,000 yen will be included in the childbirth expenses.
